Fender says that most Fender and Squier necks are interchangeable, but I’ve never actually gone through the whole process until now. In my example we’re assuming that you have two guitars, one Fender, and one Squier and you will be removing both necks and swapping them between each other.
Considering this, are bolt-on guitar necks universal?
Unfortunately, they are not universal…even among Fender products. Careful measurement is the only way to be sure your parts are compatible. Check not just the width and length, but also the depth of the neck pocket, which is critical in achieving the correct playing action.
Similarly, are Squier necks unfinished? Yes. If you have to ask, then yes. Squier uses a low gloss finish on some of its maple necks, especially Telecasters. If the neck wasn’t finished, you’d know right away.
