Mainstream Custom Built Guitars
All of the large guitar manufacturers are building a line of what they call “custom built guitars.” Gibson, Fender, Ibanez, Dean etc. They all are doing it. But, a custom built guitar may cost $2000 or much more where an assembly line guitar that is similar may only cost $800 or so.
Hereof, are custom made guitars better?
This hand-tuning is partly how custom guitars can offer more to the discerning player. And make no mistake: discernment plays a big part in this! With custom guitar buying, you are agreeing to pay for the skill and experience of the builder as well as premium tone woods, extra inlay work and more decorative work.
Also, can you make a living making guitars? There are indeed ways to earn money building guitars but it takes many years to get to the point where you can actually make money doing it. I built and sold my first guitar in 1978 and kept on until 2007 until my warehouse and shop burned to the ground.

They carve, assemble, stain and string the instruments, and some even sell them in their own musical instrument stores. Luthiers are paid according to the number of instruments they create for clients. They earn incomes averaging more than $50,000 annually.
Can you make money building guitar kits?
No, it really won’t make you any money at all. It might seem that you can buy a kit cheaply but you should remember that it will take many hours of work… they don’t just bolt together… plus in most cases you have to apply a good finish on them… even the cheapest complete guitars look good now.
